MEET DENNIS CROWLEY

Almost five decades in boats on water.

Captain Dennis Crowley, AMS

Dennis began his career in the boating trade as a young boy working for his father in the family-owned boat shop.  He has compiled an impressive resume over his nearly 5 decades in the field. "Sometimes I feel as if I spend more time on the water in my life then I have on land, which," he adds, "Is fine with me because I definitely feel at home there!"

After years of service and training in the United States Navy, Dennis has continued to hone his craft by aggressively continuing his training and education. Among his numerous accomplishments and achievements:

  • naval submarine electrician
  • several years in outboard and sterndrive master tech certifications
  • shipyard marine electrician
  • electrical engineering training

  • shipyard change order estimator
  • yacht construction project manager

  • USCG licensed Captain/ 100 ton master with towing endorsement

  • 1973, I achieved my first of many master tech certifications in outboard and sterndrive products working at Crowley Boats LTD. Denver, Colorado and continued to maintain and add certifications through 2007 with Crowley Marine Certified Service in Aberdeen, Washington.
  • 1974-1977, I served in the US Navy as a submarine electrician stationed at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. 1977, I was honorably discharged and gained employment as a marine electrician at the Dillingham shipyard in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • 1979, I moved back to Denver, Colorado and went to work as an outboard and sterndrive mechanic in the family boat shop again. While there, I completed several factory certification courses and renewed my master tech status. In the evenings, I attended Denver University taking electrical engineering degree courses.
  • 1981, I accepted a position with Tacoma Boatbuilding Co. Inc. as a Shipyard Test and Trials Engineer. My duties were to design and conduct shipboard systems tests for new construction on Navy and USCG vessels. I was eventually promoted to Senior Change Order Estimator where I evaluated impacts to production and estimated associated costs of customer requested changes to the design of the boats. I also was involved in negotiations of the costs of the change orders. This job concluded when TBC completed the government contracts and downsized.
  • 1985, I went into business for myself as Crowley Marine Certified Services and operated in the Tacoma, Seattle, and throughout the Puget Sound region. I provided the following services; -Subcontract Marine Electrician for Jones/Goodell Yachts in Tacoma and Delta Yachts in Seattle working on new yacht construction projects. -Project Manager for Allied Marine in Seattle managing production on commercial fishing boat projects. -Dockside and boatyard mobile marine mechanical and electrical services, all phases.
  • 1992, I began providing haul-outs and Marine Surveyor services from a 40ft drydock that I purchased and kept at the Crow’s Nest Marina in Tacoma and as the on-site marine surveyor at Quinn’s Boat auctions in Tacoma and Seattle providing pre-purchase surveys.
  • 1994, I sold the floating dry-dock and opened a small boat repair shop on the Tacoma Hylebos waterway. From that location, I provided all phases of marine mechanical and electrical repairs as well as marine surveys upon request.
  • 1996, I purchased acreage and developed a boatyard in Shelton, Washington. From there I provided all phases of marine services from haul-outs, hull repairs, repowers, marine surveys, and other related boatyard services.
  • 2002, I sold the boatyard in Shelton opened up a marine supply and repair shop in Aberdeen, Washington. My son “Clinton” and my daughter “Stacy” now run that store which freed me up to focus on providing Marine Surveyor Services.
  • 2010, I upgraded my Captains License to 100 Ton Master with a towing endorsement. I built a 32 ft towboat and began providing salvage and towing services for BoatUS as a “Vessel Assist” company. I began as the sole responder, but I now have a Captain and Crew that provides these services as I focus more on being a marine surveyor full time.
  • 2012, being involved with BoatUS, I was requested to join the Hurricane Sandy CAT team as a marine surveyor, but my wife was ill and I could not get away (My wife has since fully recovered).
  • 2017, I was ask to join the Hurricane Irma CAT team as a marine surveyor. While there, I was fortunate enough to work with a great group of professional marine surveyors from around the country. While there, I was encouraged by my fellow surveyors to focus 100% of my time to my Marine Surveyor Career and to joins surveyor associations.

I have a lifetime of marine related training and experience that enhance my ability as a marine surveyor. My son and daughter now run the marine business and I am free to focus on providing Marine Surveyor services full time. I am nearly 63 years and although my good health would allow me to continue working on boats, I feel that serving as a Marine Surveyor is something that I can do and enjoy for many years to come.
